My Favorite Memories at FUS: AMx2

Image
"Every great achiever is inspired by a great mentor" - Lailah Gifty Akita, Ghanaian Author.  Welcome back or welcome to Adventures at Franklin ! This post is the last of a 3 part series where I reflect on my favorite memories at FUS. Feel free to check out part 1 on Orientation , and part 2 on Academic Travel , in case you want to read about my other favorite memories :) My time at FUS is almost over. I have 2 weeks left! One of the best things I have done at FUS is be an Academic Mentor (AM). In fact, the first time was so good, I had to do it twice! (No in reality I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to do it twice 😂). AMs helps new students transition to university life. AMs are a part of the First Year Seminar program, which is designed to introduce new students to the demands of university academics. AMs also help with orientation as student leaders, and will always be happy to support new students. Here are some of my favorite memories from my experiences. Traini...

The Franklin Podcast! Episode 3

Image
Welcome back or welcome to Adventures at Franklin! Another week means another episode of The Franklin Podcast! Here are Episodes 1 and 2 in case you need to get caught up :) Episode Description: "During the regular academic year, students have a wealth of resources available to help them succeed. One of these is the language tutors at the Writing and Learning Center (WLC). These tutors hold regular, weekly tutoring sessions with groups of students from the various language classes, tutoring students up to the 300 level. During the summer, however, these sorts of resources are cut down, as there are also not too many students taking language classes. Yet, this summer, a couple students decided to change that, with Vasco Aguglia offering tutoring to interested students taking Italian classes and Rim Maslouh supporting students taking French classes. Anushka Bagde, on the other hand, held group tutoring and study sessions to help motivate students of any subject. Listen to today...

The Franklin Podcast! Episode 2

Welcome back or welcome to Adventures at Franklin ! Today's post: Episode 2 of The Franklin Podcast. Check out Episode 1 if you haven't already :) Episode description:   " Throughout the regular academic year, the Tone Athletic Center (Franklin’s gym) hosts a wide variety of activities and sporting events, ranging from Yoga, Pilates, and dance classes and the basketball and volleyball games our newly formed teams play, and even organize weekend skiing trips. During the recent lockdowns, however, this space and the activities they normally organize were among the first things to go away. To help ease us out of this situation and help cope with the effects, Maddie Espinoza and Natascha Braase came up with a solution: yoga; and Grace Kotnik: hiking. In this episode, we will learn more about how their projects came together and what they are doing to help heal and reconstruct a sense of community at our school through exercise and mindfulness." -Carisa, Franklin Podcas...

The Franklin Podcast!

"Through this project, we could create a new forum for the exchange of innovative ideas from our own students, an outlet to voice students concerns and a medium through which we can propose new solutions ."  Carisa Villela and Joe Tally-Foos, FUS Podcast Creators.    Welcome back or welcome to  Adventures at Franklin ! This blog was created in 2013, features over 118 posts about life at Franklin University Switzerland (FUS), yet has rarely ventured beyond the medium of writing. I have long been an advocate for creating a different medium that allows students' voices to be heard, so I am happy for the launch of a podcast series at FUS, and I am even happier to feature this podcast on  Adventures at Franklin!  This new project is created and run by our very own: Carisa (Class of 2021) and Joe (Class of 2020). Here are the thoughts of the creators... "The goal of this project is to produce a podcast that introduces the student body to the projects that this su...

Spring Semester in Review Part 2: Tests and Responses

Image
" Adversity builds character " -LeBron James, American Basketball Player. Welcome back or welcome to Adventures at Franklin . Here is part 2 of my spring 2020 semester recap. Check out part 1 here:  http://adventuresatfranklin.fus.edu/2020/05/spring-2020-in-review-part-1-business.html I concluded part 1 with the first inklings that life may be impacted from COVID-19, and as we know now, life has been heavily impacted by the virus. At Franklin, so many things changed. The "travel" component of Academic Travel classes was cancelled, and instead special sessions on campus/around Switzerland would take place during the weeks of Academic Travel. These sessions were then cancelled as Switzerland announced that all public and private events were cancelled until April. In-person classes were suspended until further notice (which ended up being the rest of the semester). Many traditional Franklin events i.e. Holi, Senior Auction, Garden Party, Arab Night, Latin Amer...

Spring 2020 in Review Part 1: Business as Usual

"Self- reflection is the school of wisdom " -Baltasar Gracian, Spanish Prose Writer and Philosopher .  Welcome back or welcome to Adventures at Franklin! Another semester has come and gone, and I think it is very important to reflect on the happenings and some of the great events that transpired this spring. This semester has been the most different semester from my 6 semesters. FUS, like most places in the world during 2020, has been divided into 2 parts: life pre-pandemic and life during the pandemic. Therefore, I find it only fitting to write and split my review of Spring 2020 the same way. Here is my review of the first part of the semester at FUS. Weeks 1 and 2: January 20 - February 2 In all honesty, there was nothing too special about the week; just the standard start to the semester, everyone getting use to their classes and new semester schedules, meaning not too many things going on. The second week was more eventful, with a few events happening such as: ...

FUS Academic Travel: The Joys of Yesterday

Image
"No matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow." -Maya Angelou, American poet, singer, and civil rights activist. Welcome back or welcome to Adventures at Franklin! This blog recounts the happenings of Franklin University Switzerland, from the point of view of students. It has been over 8 weeks since the announcement that students and professors would not go on Academic Travel, and over 6 weeks since the announcement that all in-person classes would be suspended. In Switzerland, the first phase of easing measures starts tomorrow. Hopefully that means that life will go back to normal soon. In anticipation for that, let's take a look back at something which the pandemic took from Franklin students this semester, Academic Travel. Academic Travel is one of the most fun times in the semester. When I look back at my time at FUS, many of my fondest memories will have been over travel. I always say that it's great ...
